Homeless in Detroit. Help us change this picture!
Did you know?

In the Detroit area, there are at least 3,700 people in need of emergency shelter on any given night. To meet the need, there should be 1,400 more beds available.

There are less than 940 transitional housing beds for over 5,086 homeless men, women and children per night.

Over 2,000 people live on the streets each night in abandoned buildings, under a freeway overpass or some other undesirable location.

Over 10,000 families in Wayne County will become homeless at least once during the next year.
Families now constitute 26% of the number of homeless persons per year.

The statistics above are based on a 2008 study. This year we have seen the numbers grow due to the continued economic downturn. Job loss, home foreclosures, and medical expenses, combined with a host of other issues continue do drive families and individuals to a life on the streets.

While the need for emergency shelters and transitional housing facilities are growing, some of the Detroit area agencies have been forced to close for various reasons. For 60 years God has provided the Open Door Rescue Mission with the much needed resources to provide for food, clothing, education, shelter and spiritual growth for the multitudes that have come through our doors. However the need is still great. Please continue to help us, to help others. Together we can eliminate pictures like this.
